Employee Spotlight: Nancy Alvarado, PHR, Account Manager | Houston Benefit Advisors

Meet Nancy Alvarado- hailing from Pasadena, Nancy is a graduate of Texas State University with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration (B.B.A.) and a Professional in Human Resources Certification (PHR).

“We appreciate what Nancy brings to the team and look forward to a brighter 2018 with her here,” says Amanda Chan, Director of Operations.

Previously working in Human Resources as a Benefits Specialist, Nancy didn’t always know she wanted to be an Account Manager. What started as a promising career in HR gave way to a passion for helping her coworkers keep up to date on their health insurance plans and compliance regulations. Witnessing the huge impact on fellow employees that a strong knowledge of insurance can provide was a revelation. It sowed seeds of interest that would ultimately lead her to Kainos Partners.

Outside of work she is an avid animal lover, travel-planning junkie, and huge fan of quality time with family and friends. Her hobby for finding cheap flights online has paid off; Nancy has managed to secure ridiculously good prices for herself and her fiancé, Noe, on multiple occasions. They’ve been to the West Coast, Canada, and soon will travel to Mexico for their destination wedding. “It’s a fun hobby that is also practical,” Nancy smiles.

Recently we asked Nancy about her experiences with learning a new industry. Working at Kainos Partners has been exciting, because I used to work for a client of theirs, years back. Having been on the receiving end of benefit consulting, it is a rewarding experience to now be the one to offer those services. Knowing what it means to have an insurance advisor working for you gives Nancy unique insight into her new position at Kainos Partners. As Account Manager, she brings practical people skills, human resources experience, and a bright smile to work every day where she works to make each client feel listened to and valued.

Despite being thrown head first into the deep end of insurance, Nancy has taken it in stride. In a world of fluctuating regulations and what seems like endless compliance paperwork to an outsider, this can be overwhelming to a new team member.

She may confess to be “brain-full” at times, but she has proven herself to be a voracious learner, thriving off of the excitement of the fast-paced and sociable office culture of Kainos Partners.

What’s something you’ve learned about Kainos Partners since working there? “The management style is open and interested in employee contribution. A culture that’s so welcoming and committed to helping you succeed is hard to find!” Nancy describes emphatically.

What’s a project you look forward to taking ownership of? Nancy looks forward to onboarding some of Kainos Partners’ newest clients. She enjoys the implementation process, and takes ownership of walking newcomers through their plans, step by step. Assisting clients in successful resolution of their concerns while offering support and advice for future plan implementations are Nancy’s favorite responsibilities. A project she is currently working on is the renewal process for three consecutive companies. She is looking forward to getting an insider’s view of these renewal processes from start to finish.

What inspired you to pursue your PHR certification? She achieved a Professional in Human Resources certification because she believes that growth is critical to keeping one’s value in an ever-changing industry.

How did you react when your supervisor mentioned the LinkedIn Employee Spotlight? Nancy is no stranger to social media and technology. Savvy with sharing her professional passions online through Instagram and LinkedIn, being selected wasn’t a nail-biting prospect to her. It’s fun and exciting and a new experience, Nancy shares.

What Hobbies/Activities do you enjoy outside of work? Nancy loves making travel plans, looking up flight deals online, and spending time with family and her fiancé, Noe, and Phoebe, their rescue dog. As an animal lover, she hopes to get more involved with local shelters to help rescued animals find safe, loving homes.

What advice would you offer to others interested in pursuing a similar career to yours? Organization is key! Being willing to ask questions, questions, and more questions! Eventually you will find the answer. Also, it is important to be both flexible and proactive. Genuinely liking to help people is huge, and again, not being afraid to ask questions. She adds, “Change is hard for everyone, but good things happen when you try something new.
